DURHAM, N.C., and HYDERABAD, India, Oct 27, 2026 - Pairwise today announced that Kaveri Seed Company Limited (NSE: KSCL, BSE: 532899), one of India’s leading seed companies, has licensed Pairwise's Fulcrum® platform to develop improved maize, cotton, rice, pearl millet, mustard and vegetable varieties suited to the country's diverse growing conditions. The agreement marks Pairwise's first partnership in India, expanding the Fulcrum network to one of the world's most important agricultural regions.
Fulcrum is Pairwise's proprietary CRISPR toolbox, bringing together multiple editing technologies under a single license for precise crop improvement. Founded in 1976, Kaveri has five decades of experience in hybrid seed research and development, with research, production, sales and marketing operations across India.
"India is a critical market for the future of agriculture, and bringing Fulcrum to Kaveri marks an important expansion of our global network," said Tom Adams, CEO of Pairwise. "Our goal with Fulcrum is to enable organizations that know their crops and markets best. Kaveri knows Indian agriculture deeply, and we look forward to seeing where they take the technology."
"Kaveri has built its business on developing climate-resilient hybrids that perform across India's diverse growing conditions. Fulcrum adds speed and precision to the research and development work our teams already do well, helping us develop stronger, more resilient varieties for Indian farmers," said G.V. Bhaskar Rao, Chairman and Managing Director, Kaveri Seed Company Limited.
With Kaveri’s addition, the Fulcrum network now includes more than 30 organizations across six continents, including seed, food and beverage companies, academic institutions, and public research organizations working across plants, animals, insects, and microbes.

Read through for an excerpt from our recently published article in AgFunderNews:
Gene editing is rapidly expanding beyond row crops into specialty crops, animals, and microbes, says Pairwise, which has seen a “dramatic uptick” in licensing deals for its Fulcrum platform over the past 12-18 months and now has 25 licensees covering more than 30 species.
Unlike transgenic plants—which are classified as GMOs as foreign DNA from another species is introduced—gene editing involves tinkering with species’ native genes, which eases the regulatory pathway in a growing number of markets and can deliver speed and precision, two potential gamechangers in breeding, says COO Ian Miller, PhD.
“We’re really enthusiastic about the direction that the regulatory environment is going worldwide,” adds Miller, who says Pairwise is seeing growing interest in Europe now that the EU has enshrined a new, simpler regulatory framework for plants made using new genomic techniques.
“I think there’s an understanding that in many cases, what comes out from gene editing is equivalent to conventional breeding because we’re working within the plant’s own genes. The beauty of gene editing is that if it sits somewhere in the gene pool, you can bring it to bear for a problem.”
